The value of a home is more than what’s built on a piece of property. In this case, for this particular home, it has a lot of significance. The new owner will enjoy a fully restored home that once held the days of old and remembrance, to make new history and memories. As an added bonus, the proceeds from this sale will be used by Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity to build more affordable housing. Learn more about that here!
An incredible amount of planning, manual labor, and thoughtful design have gone into this home to restore it to a more functional version of what it once was in 1905. The new owner will enjoy a complete renovation that honored the original details that make it so special. From the original fir floors, to the high ceilings and dramatic millwork, this is a home to remember.
The design of the kitchen was greatly improved by opening up a wall and adding a custom window seat that overlooks the large dining area and freshly landscaped backyard. High-end appliances were installed, including a JennAir gas range and fridge. Recessed lighting, quartz counters and tile floors add functionality and style to the space.
Many more substantive updates were also made, including wiring, plumbing and double pane windows. Tankless, on-demand hot water plus ductless heat pumps that offer efficient heating and cooling! The fully fenced backyard has a new storage shed and two paved off-street parking spaces.
About the Historical Wedge District
The Wedge Neighborhood is significant in its representation of a pre-WWII middle class Tacoma neighborhood. The original Wedge settlers were a very diverse group of people from all walks of life and different parts of the world. The group included professionals, laborers, merchants and the clergy. Tacoma benefited, as the settlers brought their languages, foods, culture and religions. Some owners of the larger homes took in boarders and extended-family members.
Life in the Wedge Today
Today, the Wedge neighborhood is close to many of Tacoma’s favorite eateries. In fact, 417 S M Street gets an 85 on the Walkscore/Bikescore rating.
Right around the corner is Southern Kitchen which serves soul food including favorites such as fried chicken & collard greens served in a laid-back space. Always get a corncake and sweet tea, you won’t be disappointed! You’re also neighbors with It’s Greek to Me, and Lele’s, in the nearby Hilltop neighborhood.
Wright Park is a great place to get outside, and is very popular in the summer months as it has a free sprayground, playground and plenty of picnic tables. This 27 acre arboretum is home to a rich collection of more than 600 trees - stunning in both the spring & summer when they’re ample and bright green, and impressive in the fall as they change from green to feuille-morte of autumn foliage.
Discover independent and foreign films playing a little further down on 6th Avenue (one of the streets that makes up the pie shaped “Wedge”) at The Grand Cinema, a nonprofit and volunteer supported theater. Still playing is Won’t You Be My Neighbor a documentary on the life of beloved Mister Fred Rogers.
If you follow Division (the other side of the Wedge) towards the water make sure you stop at Tacoma landmark Frisco Freeze - a quick-serve spot with retro style hamburgers, fries and shakes & a choice of drive-thru or walk-up ordering. A few blocks further and you’ll be in the booming Stadium District.
There’s a huge variety of eateries here including, Rhein Haus with their giant pretzels and flavorful pork schnitzel, local hangout Parkway Tavern, the Instagram worthy Indo Asian Street Eatery, newly open Moshi Moshi, and their neighbor, throwback diner Shake, Shake, Shake. (We also love a late breakfast at the Art House Cafe and the handmade chocolates at Tease). There are lots of services in this neighborhood, from La Bella Nail Spa, Franco the Tailor, Morrell’s Dry Cleaners, Ball Auto and more!
For commuters, Hwy 16 and I -705 are both just 5 minutes away. The Link light rail expansion will have a stop at the corner of 6th Ave and MLK Way, right along Tacoma’s Medical Mile.
