What’s Nearby
Orting sits right between the Puyallup and Carbon Rivers with Mt. Rainier looming out the back window — small-town feel, big-country backyard. Here's what you've got close to home.
The Mercantile is one of the downtown shops regulars swing through for gifts, local goods, and that small-town storefront energy — stop in on a Saturday morning and see for yourself!
For breakfast or a proper lunch, Tim's Kitchen on Washington Ave is the spot. Hand-breaded fried chicken, chicken fried steak, gourmet burgers, a salad bar, and all-beef hot dogs — open 7 to 9 seven days a week.
Right off Main, Main City Park is the downtown green space with the play structure, covered gazebo, basketball court, and big open grass — also where the Foothills Trailhead sits, which leads us to the Foothills Trail, which runs 22 miles on an old railroad bed from Puyallup through Orting and South Prairie up to Buckley — flat, paved, and perfect for a bike ride, a jog, or a slow walk with coffee in hand.
When you feel like a proper day trip, Farm 12 is just down the way — restored tulip farm, restaurant, coffee shop, and event venue with Mt. Rainier views. Good spot to bring out-of-town guests when you want to show off the area.
The Carbon River entrance to Mount Rainier National Park is right up the road — rain-forest nature trails, the Carbon Glacier hike, ranger station, the whole deal. The river runs 30 miles from the glacier down to the Puyallup, meeting it right here in Orting. Hard to explain what it does for daily life to have that kind of landscape five minutes away. You get used to it, but you don't really get over it.
