Let's Get Shredded! Drop off your docs on April 15th

It’s tax season again and that means it’s time to file your taxes and get rid of those old documents you no longer need! By shredding these types of documents, you’ll free up space AND protect yourself against identity theft and fraud.

On April 15th from 11am to 1pm, the Old Town Abode Office is hosting a shredding event where you can bring your unwanted personal and tax documents to be securely shredded. Unsure of what you should be keeping vs. shredding?

What you definitely want to shred

  • Old bank statements
  • Expired credit cards
  • Outdated medical records
  • Pay stubs older than a year
  • Old tax returns (after 7 years)
  • Credit reports you no longer need
  • Junk mail with sensitive information
  • Old bills or invoices

These documents all have personal and sensitive information that someone could use for their own gain. Make sure they’re completely destroyed alongside other documents you’d like to bring.

don’t forget to shred these things

Although we all know to shred items with your social security number or personal information, other documents may be less obvious candidates for shredding. These include:

  • Documents that have your signature on them
  • Old resumes
  • Mailing labels (like the ones sent to you for free)
  • Utility & phone bills (can be used to establish residency)
  • ATM receipts
  • Report cards
  • Travel itinerary
  • Junk mail credit card offers
  • Copies of old leases & other legal documents

what to keep

While it’s fun to declutter and pare down, there are some docs & records you may need to refer back to. And even though many documents are available online, make sure you store copies of these in a safe location:

  • Retirement account contributions
  • Receipts for work done on your home (up to 6 years after you sell!)
  • Insurance policies
  • Leases
  • Medical records and bills (suggested timeframe for these varies from at least a year to as long as five!)
  • Death certificates for family members
