THE COMMUNITY

The house is not the only charming thing you’ll find at this address -- it also happens to be located near some of North Tacoma’s most walkable neighborhoods (and they are pretty bike friendly too!) A few blocks South brings you right to the entrance of the gorgeous University of Puget Sound campus. The onsite coffee shops and winding paths are big draws for the neighbors all year round. Every spring UPS hosts a flea market with the Women’s League where you can find vendors selling antiques, repurposed items, vintage clothing, jewelry, bath and body goods and artwork. UPS also regularly host national speakers, concerts and art exhibits.

To the East you’ll find the Three Bridges District, where you can walk or bike to yoga, shops, bars, dining, parks and more! This area was aptly named for the 3 bridges that existed between North Yakima Ave and North Oakes Street. Only two bridges remain, the North 21st Street Bridge that carries cars over the gulch and the second bridge for pedestrians and bicyclists on North Yakima Avenue between North Fife Street and North Anderson Street.

Along North 21st Street is a great mix of independent retailers including: Willow Salon and Spa, Source Yoga, Magoo’s Ale House and Eatery, Evolve Home + Apparel, Lou’s Barber Shop, 21 Cellars, The Rustic Aristocat Coffee Co, and The Beach House Salon. Venture a few blocks further to find fresh, high-quality from local farms at Dave’s Meat and Produce. They also offer a small selection of produce, beer and wine, condiments and breads.

Another great spot for coffee is Brewer’s Row, located less than a 1/2 mile away from your new home. Order an espresso at the bar and then stay for a plate of S.O.B B&G - that’s split cheddar biscuits with chorizo-jalapeno gravy. Don’t miss out on their happy hour and delicious assortment of tacos: Al Pastor, Pollo, Carnitas, Pescado, Carne Asada, Papas Dulce (roasted sweet potatoes & kale) and Yaka (braised jackfruit). You can also order churros to go!

Right next door you’ll find Cooks Tavern which is one of Tacoma’s go-to spots for weekend brunch! They’ve got biscuits and gravy, eggs benedict and waffles -- but their hash selections is where it’s at. We recommend the house smoked corned beef, potatoes, onion & kale with poached eggs on top. They also serve lunch and dinner and happy hour is everyday from 3-5 PM & 9 PM-to-close everyday. Don’t miss their rotating menu featuring inspired dishes from other countries - right now the menu is all about Emilia Romagna, a region in Northeast Italy.

The popular Proctor district lies less than a mile North and is a great spot to grab groceries at either The Metropolitan Market, Safeway or the Saturday Farmer’s Market. Don’t feel like cooking? You can try Knapp’s Restaurant, Peaks & Pints Craft Beer Store, Pomodoro, Europa Bistro, East West, or Viva to name a few! For family fun, Proctor has The Blue Mouse Theatre, Chalet Bowl and the Waffle Stop, as well as local favorite Teaching Toys.
