Cool down in the summer in the banks of the Nisqually River. Just 10 miles away is McKenna Park. It’s a local hot spot with a playground, picnic tables and a paved boat launch. There’s plenty of parking available, picnic tables and restrooms.
Grab a bite to eat to have a picnic on the river at Jim Bob’s Chuck Wagon - meat plates with two sides and a roll or sweet cornbread, doesn’t that sound like a heavenly lunch? They offer brisket, pulled pork and sausages + they have everyone’s favorite sides to accompany the plates like green beans with bacon and onions, mac n cheese, cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans and fried okra.
Spend a couple of hours at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park. The tram is currently closed for tours, but they’re offering a Wild Drive, where you get to go through the park in the comfort of your own vehicle. Here you can experience seeing moose eating grass out of the lake, newborn bison calf, herds of Roosevelt elk and mountain goats roaming the free area. Reservations do need to be made for this tour as space if limited. Or enjoy the Wild Walk Experience - Laugh as Hawthorne and Huckleberry, two young orphaned grizzly bears splash and play in their pool, listen as the high pitched whistle of the eagles draws you closer and if you’re quiet and still, you may get a glimpse of the gray wolf masterfully sneaking through the brush. There are over 40 species of native Northwest animals who call this park their home.
You’re just 57 miles from stunning Paradise at Mount Rainier! There’s an abundance of hiking (like the Pacific Crest Trail), hunting, fishing, wildlife watching, skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, horseback riding, rafting and kayaking, mushroom and berry picking and camping available here.
Elk Plain is 10 minutes away - Fred Meyer, Rite Aid, Jiffy Lube, and lots of little restaurants. Downtown Yelm is 7 miles away - there are lots of little shops, dining options, a Safeway, a Tractor Supply store with a variety of agricultural & livestock supplies, plus tools, workwear & boots. You’ll also find a Walmart Supercenter and Prairie Lanes for bowling.
